The Southwest Harbor Fire Department is a Municipal public safety agency created by town ordinance during May of 1995. The Department is charged with the principal responsibility to protect the residents and visitors of the town from all manners of emergencies involving fire, natural disasters,hazardous conditions and any other emergency or non-emergency condition that the Fire Department is best equipped and trained to manage.
The Fire Department is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers from all walks of life and ranging in age from the Junior Fire Department members ages 8 to 17 and Senior members who remain active well into their 70's. The Department currently has 18 Junior Fire members and 36 Regular members on their roster.
The tractor of an "18 wheeler" catches fire at the bluffs
parking lot on Rte 102 North, The truck was successfully
detached from the trailer and the fire was quickly contained.
There were no injuries.
